My Dream Team Picks of the 2014 FIFA World Cup, What’s Yours?

It’s the FIFA season right now. 32 teams started off their journey to win the ultimate trophy in Soccer, the FIFA World Cup. The 2014 FIFA world cup hosted by Brazil has been full of excitement, drama, nail-biting finishes and most of all the non-stop entertainment. There were some great moments in the 20th edition of the world biggest soccer event. Whether the game of revenge where Netherlands paid back Spain of their previous World Cup final defeat by crushing the defending champs by 5-1 or Messi – the Argentinian star player scoring his 2nd goal at FIFA after 8 long years, or the famous biting incident of Saurez.

The 2014 FIFA world cup had it all. There were some major upsets where Spain, Italy, England and Portugal didn’t make it to the 2nd round while some surprises where underdog teams like Belgium, Chile, Columbia, Costa Rica, Algeria, and Nigeria made it to the 2nd round with Belgium and Costa Rica even reached the Quarter Finals.

Yesterday, the last quarterfinal of the 2014 FIFA World Cup ended giving us the top 4 teams of this FIFA World Cup: Brazil, Argentina, Netherlands, and Germany – Nicknamed as BANG! :)

Now I have been religiously following each and every game of the tournament and hence decided to make a dream team by picking the best players of this mega event.

My Dream Team Picks of 2014 FIFA World Cup:

Arjen Robben

Arjen Robben (M):

The attacking midfielder from Netherlands has proved his real mantle yet again at this FIFA World Cup. No doubt even at the age of 30 , he’s the fastest on the ground and proved it by scoring a goal at a speed of 37 kmph maintaining it for 100 meters and making a new world record during their first game of the tournament. There was no stopping of any kind for this Dutchmen and he contributed well enough to take his team into the Semi-Finals.

Robben who also plays for German Bundesliga club, Bayern Munich, is a veteran Dutch professional football player who has represented his team on the biggest level 3 times (2006, 2010, and 2014) in a row now. Although at the age of 30, he’s considered to be the fastest on the field holding a record among all the players in this mega event. Previously he played for both Chelsea and Real Madrid before being signed by Bayern Munich and also helped Chelsea win 2 consecutive Premier League titles which earned him FA Premier League Player of the Month award too. His successful run also continued with Bayern Munich and helped them win the league title. Along with a successful campaign in the club championships, the Dutchmen has also contributed in some important games for Netherlands national team and almost helped his national team reach the finals of the 2010 FIFA World Cup where they lost to Spain.

Giorgio Chiellini

Giorgio Chiellini (D)

Giorgio Chiellini is an Italian footballer who currently plays for Serie A club Juventus and the Italian national team. He began his career as a left-back, but made his name as a hard-tackling centre-back – Walter Mazzarri once labeled him “a force of nature, from another planet” – with a penchant for scoring headers from set-pieces. A popular figure with fans, he is the club’s vice-captain, behind Gianluigi Buffon.

Baresi, regarded as one of the greatest defenders in football history, has gone on record to state that Thiago Silva is the defender who most resembles him, and said in June 2012 that Thiago Silva was his “heir” His leadership skills are also apparent through his success in captaining the Brazilian national team and Paris Saint Germain.

Howard started his career with the North Jersey Imperials before making a move to the MetroStars. His appearances soon attracted the attention of Manchester United, who signed him in 2003. He enjoyed relative success with them as they won the 2003 FA Community Shield, the 2003–04 FA Cup and the 2005–06 League Cup. However, after United signed Edwin van der Sar, Howard went out on loan to Everton to play more first-team football and eventually signed permanently with them in February 2007. On January 4, 2012, Howard scored a goal, his first as a professional, against Bolton Wanderers. This made him only the fourth goalkeeper to score a goal in a Premier League match.

He has a reputation for playing through pain. In September 2007 he accepted a call-up from the United States for a friendly against Brazil, and after an hour of the game his finger was dislocated in a collision. In March 2013, during an FA Cup game against Oldham Athletic he broke two bones in his back. In both incidents, he continued playing until the final whistle.
